Southside Knights Chess Academy
Southside Knights Chess Club was founded in 2018 by a school teacher. The club now has over 30 members from diverse ages and background. As the club grew in popularity, a partnership was formed to create Southside Knight Chess Academy to help young people learn and develop their Chess skills.
Mission Statement
Our goal is to share this incredible game and bring with it the many educational benefits to children ages 4 and above.
By providing a carefully constructed syllabus, we aim to teach the art and science of Chess to our students by guiding them with our expert instructors. In the long-run we hope our passion and dedication will nurture our students to becoming strong tournament level Chess players or even future masters.
Our Curriculum
With the wealth of experience amongst our coaches, we have carefully hand picked a reputable syllabus that will guide your child to greater Chess improvement. We will take our students on a learning journey from the very first move they make on the Chessboard to strong tournament level Chess or even mastership. Before your child enrols as a Chess academy member, they must take a Chess assessment test so we can place them on the right program.
Cost for enrolment, 1000 baht lifetime membership with a free Team SSK Polo Shirt. Costs for workbooks are not included. Please enquire at our academy for workbook prices.(300 to 600 baht depending on level)
Education
At Southside Knights Chess Academy, we consider Chess as an important educational tool. Chess can hone in on important developmental attributes such as planning, spatial awareness, sportsmanship, problem solving, calculation, visualisation, pattern recognition, enhance cognitive function and many more aspects that occur in regular Chess practice. A plethora of studies have shown a strong correlation between learning to play chess and academic performance. A landmark study by Smith and Cage (2000) posited that students who received chess instruction scored significantly higher on all measures of academic achievement, including maths, spatial analysis, and non-verbal reasoning ability (p. 19-26). Other findings in various locations around the United States and Canada indicate that Chess results in improved scores on standardized tests in both maths and reading. Being Phuket’s first ever Chess academy, we aim to share this sport/pastime with our community and bring out the best in your child by unlocking their full potential.

Phuket Chess Battles II returned with a bang last month (Nov 29) at The Kudo Hotel, Patong Beach when 29 of the brightest young minds clashed over six rounds of Rapid Chess.
